According to Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett, the immediate banĀ imposed on live cattle exports from Australia to Indonesia has seriously damaged diplomatic relations between the two countries. Mr Barnett is of the opinion that the dramatic action taken by the Australian Government could set relations back thirty years.

Mr Barnett also said that after insulting the Indonesian people, the Australian Government must reasure Indonesia that we as a nation want to see trade between the two countries continue in harmony. However, urgent attention is required by the Indonesian Government to address the problems with the slaughter methods being used in some establishments.

When there are issues like this which affects Western Australia, Mr Barnett said he would not sit on his hands while waiting for action from Canberra.

The West Australian Agriculture Minister Mr Terry Redman is now visiting Indonesia to offer support on behalf of the WA government to begin trading again as soon as possible.
